The only way to get it now is by summoning it for a limited amount of time using scrolls. Don't call Arcania "Gothic 4" even if the title stated that. For G3, install the latest community patch 1. This is not fixed you advice people to buy not working game because of your fan itch. I advice to buy the game working not to cheat people my fanboyism. I'm not trying to convice people into buying the game. I never did. Gothic has much more interesting story than Gothic 2. Gothic has also more gloomy atmosphere, which really fits it well. G2 feels a bit more happy-trippy fantasy adventure. Gameplaywise both are practically the same. Story is interrelated.

An intro cinematic summarizes the events of the first game, and your character's got a bit of classic amnesia.
The devs put the amnesia gimmick in to explain why your character's back at level 1, but it also gives characters a chance to reintroduce themselves to the main character, under the pretense that he doesn't remember who they are.
With that said, though, this is one of those sequels that you enjoy a lot more if you played the first. There are a lot of references to the first game, and plenty of recurring characters and locations which you really appreciate more if you recognize their significance.
So although you can play G2 and get along just fine, I would really recommend playing the first game, first. Alternatively, if you have an hour and a half, you could watch a fan-made movie using in-game footage to tell the story of G1.
A lot of care went into it; I've watched it and it's fairly decent. Not as good as playing the game, of course, but not a bad alternative.
